TTB Episode 3: Back to School

The conversations we need to have before the school year gets busy

The start of a new school year usually brings the familiar checklist: school supplies, new clothes, transportation, schedules, and getting everyone back into a routine. But there’s another side of back to school that deserves just as much attention: safety, communication, preparedness, and the relationships surrounding our children.

For Episode 3 of the RLTS Train the Block Community Education Initiative, Real Life Training Services brought those conversations to the table with Queen Hester Legacy for a special Back to School discussion.

General Safety Starts Before the Emergency

Safety isn't simply knowing what to do when something goes wrong. It starts with having conversations and plans before there is a problem.

We discussed everyday safety considerations such as knowing who is responsible for children, making sure emergency contacts are current, understanding who to call for help, and helping children recognize trusted adults and situations that may require them to speak up.

Emergency preparedness was another important part of the conversation. Families don't have to anticipate every possible situation, but having basic plans and making sure children understand what to do can help everyone respond more confidently when something unexpected happens.

Co-Parenting Is Part of the Safety Conversation

Back to school can also bring another layer of coordination for families who share parenting responsibilities.

Different households may have different schedules, expectations, routines, and communication styles. The conversation focused on how adults can work through those differences while keeping the child's needs at the center.

That includes communicating directly instead of putting children in the middle, establishing boundaries, sharing important school and emergency information, and finding ways to provide consistency even when households operate differently.

Co-parenting doesn't require two households to do everything exactly the same. It does require adults to recognize that children shouldn't have to carry the weight of adult conflict.

Communication & Boundaries Matter

We also talked about the importance of communication and boundaries within families.

Children need to know that they can ask questions, express concerns, and tell a trusted adult when something doesn't feel right. Adults also need boundaries that allow important conversations to happen without turning every disagreement into conflict.

These conversations may not always be easy, but they are part of creating healthier and safer environments for children and families.

More Than a Back-to-School Checklist

This episode was a reminder that back to school is about more than getting children ready for the classroom.

It's also an opportunity for parents, caregivers, families, and communities to pause and ask:

Are we prepared?
Are we communicating?
Do our children know what to do if something goes wrong?
Are the adults around them working together?

That's the heart of Train the Block: creating space for conversations that connect everyday life with practical knowledge.

A special thank you to Queen Hester Legacy for joining Real Life Training Services and bringing her perspective as an author, poet, educator, entrepreneur, nursing student, and lifelong learner with a passion for education, family, faith, healing, and generational knowledge.
